What is Riot Control?

Reference to Wikipedia online, ‘’Riot control refers to the measures used by police, military, or other forces to control, disperse, and arrest civilians that are involved in a riot, demonstration, or protest. Law enforcement officers or soldiers have long used less-lethal weapons such as batons and whips to disperse crowds.’’ Even though less-lethal weapons/non-lethal weapons like CS tear gas, rubber bullet were used in disperse crowds, causality and injuries can still happen. The following is the case study of Riot Control in Thailand and Israel.

Thailand Incident
Thai anti-government protesters help a man who was injured when riot police threw tear gas canisters during a protest outside the parliament building, in Bangkok on October 7, 2008. A female protester was killed during clashes with police who fired tear gas to try and disperse thousands of demonstrators rallying outside parliament, a hospital official said. Palenstinian Incidient
Shanbo Heinemann, a pro-Palestinian activist from San Francisco, California, reacts after being shot in the head with a rubber bullet fired by Israeli troops during a protest against Israel’s controversial separation barrier near the West Bank village of Bilin, February 22, 2008. Even though Shanbo was lucky and recovered from this injury, there are still plenty of innocent civilians were killed by rubber bullet in Israel.
Israel Incident
Rubber-coated bullets are intended to inflict superficial painful injuries to deter rioters. But a study of their use by Israeli security forces, published this week in The Lancet medical journal, has found police often fire from too close and aim poorly. Even when fired properly, it said, the bullets are so inaccurate that they can cause unintended injuries. The study, conducted by doctors at the Rambam Medical Center at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa in northern Israel, involved 152 people who were admitted to hospitals in early October 2000 with a total of 201 wounds from rubber-coated bullets.
